People in their Diversity

My father is in prison – who can help me?

When fathers – or less often mothers – are taken into custody, this is a dramatic event for the children. They lose their safe social world, and anger and anxiety can lead to their social withdrawal.

When the prison doors close behind a parent, the rest of the family stays outside. When the father or mother are put behind bars, this is a dramatic event for the children. Our Freiräume programme is tailored to families who find themselves in such a situation.
At the centre of our Freiräume programme are the children of parents in custody or who have been discharged. It is also open to relatives, fathers and mothers in custody, and people who are in contact with this target group.

These are our offers outside prison as well as in a closed or open prison:

  • father/mother-child groups
  • counselling for children and young people
  • support with family issues
  • family reunions
  • joint weekends of father and child
  • assisted meetings
  • further education offers and information materials
